Ambassador Chatardová elected as President of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations

Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations, H.E. Mrs. Marie Chatardová, was elected seventy-third President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on July 27, 2017. Mrs. Chatardová is only a third woman to preside over ECOSOC since the creation of the United Nations more than 70 years ago. The Czech Republic now gains presidency over one of the three principal bodies of the UN.
ECOSOC is responsible for 70% of both human and financial resources of the UN. It coordinates a wide variety of groups and committees and provides for effective cooperation between the main bodies of the UN and its numerous agencies, programs and funds. Economic and Social Council framework also formulates recommendations to the member states regarding global economic, social and environmental challenges and issues.
The 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals further elevated the importance of ECOSOC, which is charged with overseeing the implementation of these goals. The 2030 Agenda is an action plan for people, planet and prosperity. It strives for eradication of poverty and strengthening of global peace and freedom.
The main priority of the presidency of the Czech Republic is “Toward sustainable, resilient and inclusive societies through participation of all”. Fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda requires collective efforts of every part of our society on local, regional and global levels. Every one of us is equally important!
ECOSOC comprises of 54 member states elected by the General Assembly for a three year mandate. During its first session for the period of 2017-2018, the Economic and Social Council elected also its three Vice-Presidents. Permanent Representatives of Belgium, Tajikistan and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines have been elected to serve in this capacity. Ambassador Chatardová will preside over the ECOSOC for a period of one year.
