Ambassador Chatardová addressed the Coimbra Group Annual Conference

Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations Marie Chatardová addressed the Coimbra Group Annual Conference that was held at Charles University in Prague from 15 to 18 June 2021. Main theme of the annual meeting of the association of long-established multidisciplinary universities of high international standard was “Sustainable Universities in the 21st Century”. Ambassador Chatardová delivered a statement dedicated to the achievement of SDG 4, i.e. ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all, and on the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on education.

The conference focused on education, research, innovation and role of universities in the society in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference set out the theoretical framework of multi-level governance (international, European, national and local) applied to the fields of education and research and discussed how universities operate within such an environment. The participants also deliberated on the roles played by the United Nations, European Commission and other European institutions (such as European Parliament), university associations (including Coimbra Group), European University Alliances, student organizations, and universities themselves.

The key messages at the conference were delivered by prominent speakers, including Ms. Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, by Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General, and by Prof. Gary Marks, author of the concept of multi-level governance.
