Bayan Tooroi, June 24, 2018 - Miroslav Bobek, Director of the Prague Zoo, together with Czech Ambassador to Mongolia, Jiri Brodsky, handed over eight motorcycles for a total price of CZK 130,000 to the rangers of the Great Gobi A Strictly Protected Area over the weekend. This way, Prague Zoo is involved in the protection of an extremely valuable territory with exceptional flora and fauna. Its aim is to support the protection of wild camels that are not living anywhere else in Mongolia, except Gobi A.
"We continue to transport Przewalski horses from Europe to Mongolia and support related activities, but our interest has spread to protect other endangered ungulates. In addition to the Mongol saiga, it is especially a wild camel - a species quite different from the domestic camel with two-humps" said Miroslav Bobek, Director of the Prague Zoo. Motorbikes are absolutely essential for the work of rangers of Gobi A area where about five hundred of these camels live. They monitor the area same size as Swiss territory where the difference between the lowest winter temperature and the highest summer temperature is almost 80 degrees, guarding this area from poachers and gold diggers, checking the state of water resources, collecting samples, etc."
The Czech Ambassador to Mongolia, Jiří Brodský, noted during today’s motorbike handover ceremony that: "This is the first step by Prague Zoo in engaging in activities in the Great Gobi A Strictly Protected Area. Like the transport of Przewalski horses and other activities in neighboring Gobi B, the Prague Zoo contributes very visibly to promote the reputation that our country has in Mongolia."
