“Transfer of Know-How in the Approach to Eliminating Environmental Burdens - Phase II”
On 15.09.2017, a press conference on the end of the bilateral development cooperation project between the Czech Republic and Mongolia titled “Transfer of Know-How in the Approach to Eliminating Environmental Burdens – Phase II” was held at the Khaan Conference Hall of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia (MET). It was attended by the Mr. Oldrich Zajicek, Deputy Head of Embassy of the Czech Republic in Mongolia, Mr. Ondrej Urban, Head of Survey and Decontamination, Mr. Ondrej Perlinger, Project Manager of realizator DEKONTA a.s., Mr. L. Jargalsaikhan, Director, Chemistry and Chemical Technology Institute, Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Mr. A. Enkhbat, Director, Environmental Assessment and Audit Division, MET.
Funded by the Government of the Czech Republic through its Czech Development agency, the project is implemented in two phases by the DEKONTA a.s. – a company with extensive experience in Mongolian environmental sector due to their previous decontamination projects and endeavours in Mongolia and worldwide. First phase in years 2013–2015 covered assessment of the current situation, elaboration of methodologies, proposal of procedures and legislative framework. Furthermore, a database of contaminated sites in GIS environment was created and a field survey of 20 selected contaminated sites was carried out, including sampling and analysis of the samples. Ongoing second phase of the project in years 2016–2017 detailed contamination survey of 3 selected sites were be conducted by accredited Mongolian and Czech laboratories. Those places include 1) site of Veterinary Station in Bulgan with pesticide pollution, 2) site of the former Nalaikh glassworks with radioactive pollutants, and 3) area around the city of Zuunbayan with petroleum residual polluted, two of them are urban areas.
The project aims to systematically increase Mongolian capacities to comprehensively address the issue of environmental damage so that future contamination problems can be handled by Mongolian environmental inspectors. A part of the project contains a capacity development, such as training/workshop of remediation technologies for employees and officers of state administration from all aimags and Capital City of Ulaanbaatar, as well as, interested international donor organizations. The project is of great importance thanks to, in addition to the theoretical part, the practical training designed to present demonstrative remediation actions at selected localities of Bulgan and Nalaikh, is carried out in 2016 and 2017.
Furthermore, under the project detailed remediation project proposal was completed for Bulgan and Nalaikh sites that will reduce significantly the human health risks of people living in there. Czech side is looking for potential partners for the further co-implementation of this project. As a final output of the project a compendium of remediation techniques will be elaborated, adjusted specifically to Mongolian conditions.
Chemicals contamination problems are not visible with normal eyesight, thus people might get contaminated unknowingly, so that, they are more dangerous than other problems in terms of human health and well-being risks. That’s why press conference attracted much media attention, as well as, general public.
We hope to see the further implementation of the successful project.
