The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Stockholm, the Swedish-Czech-Slovak Association, and the Czech Centre Stockholm invite you to a special movie screening of the tragicomedy The Gardener's Year. The screening of the film directed by Jiří Havelka (released in 2024) will take place on 5 February 2025 at 18:00 in the Pavilion of our Embassy. This film is part of our commemoration of the 130th anniversary of the birth of Karel Čapek, a prominent figure in Czech literature, whose anniversary was on 9 January.
Synopsis:
At the foot of a picturesque hill, a gardener (Oldřich Kaiser) and his wife live peacefully, tending to their small gardening. Their idyllic life is disrupted when a new owner moves into a nearby castle and begins transforming the landscape to his liking. When the gardening interferes with his plans, a series of bizarre events unfolds. First, the new owner erects a razor-wire fence and closes the driveway. As his actions escalate, tensions rise, and the gardener must take matters into his own hands.
While the police and the mayor are bogged down in bureaucratic red tape, the gardener fights to protect his home. The Gardener's Year is inspired by a true story and the literary work of the same name by Karel Čapek.
Oldřich Kaiser, who plays the lead role, has been nominated for both the Czech Film Critics’ Award and the Czech Lion Award this year.
