Czech Photographer Portrays LGBTQ+ Life Behind the Iron Curtain

Date: 24 January 2025 5:00 PM - 12 April 2025, Venue: Centrum för fotografi, Bjurholmsplan 26, Stockholm.

On Friday, January 24, 2025, the exhibition T-Club opened at the Centrum för fotografi (CFF) in Stockholm. For the first time in Sweden, Libuše Jarcovjáková is showcasing her groundbreaking photographs depicting life at the LGBTQ+ club T-Club in 1980s Prague.

You can find a photo report from the opening in the attached gallery.

In this exhibition, Jarcovjáková invites us into the colorful and vibrant community of the T-Club. Her sharp flash captures the diverse atmospheres and personalities of the renowned bar. Taken between 1983 and 1985 in communist Prague, these images reflect everyday joy and life across different social classes and genders.

About Libuše Jarcovjáková:  Born in 1952, Libuše Jarcovjáková has been a photographer since the 1970s. Her powerful images document her life, feelings, and surroundings. For years, she focused on the Roma and Vietnamese communities in Czechoslovakia, as well as the LGBTQ+ community. In the late 1970s, she first visited Japan, returning twice more in the 1980s. In 1985, seeking escape from the monotony and restrictions of communist Czechoslovakia, she married to gain West Berlin citizenship. Since 1992, she has been living in Prague again.
“The T-Club was a place where the pressures of the communist regime melted away, and the lightness often lasted until morning. The series carries a strong message of freedom during unfree times, which still resonates today. Libuše sensitively captures regulars, stray visitors, her friends, herself, and life within the club,” says Lucie Černá, curator of the exhibition.

The exhibition is accompanied by the presentation of the book T-Club (Untitled Publishing, 2024), offering a unique glimpse into the alternative life of this legendary LGBTQ+ club in 1980s Prague.
