SEOUL – Lunch to mark the start of local Czech EU Presidency

As in almost 90 countries all over the world from Albania to Zimbabwe, where the Czech Republic has its resident diplomatic missions, Czech embassies have started their six-months-long local European Union Presidency on January 1, 2009. A lunch for the ambassadors and chargé d´affaires´ of EU member states in Seoul´s Castle Praha restaurant to mark the start of the Presidency took place on January 28, 2009.

On the occasion of the beginning of the Czech Republic´s Presidency of the European Union, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Republic of Korea, H.E. Mr. Jaroslav Olša, jr., hosted a lunch for all resident ambassadors and heads of missions of 20 EU member states and the representation of the European Commission resident in Seoul. Eighteen representatives met in famous Czech restaurant Castle Praha (www.castlepraha.co.kr) in Hongik area of Seoul on January 28, 2009. There they had a chance to taste a typical Czech specialties as well as famous Czech beer and enjoy a unique architecture of Prague´s Old Town Square Tower with its astronomical clock, recreated in Seoul by Korean builders and artists only a few years ago. Books by Czech authors in various official languages of the EU member states have been given as gifts to all heads of missions which took part in this informal beginning of the Czech EU Presidency in the Republic of Korea.

To mark the Czech EU Presidency, a series of cultural activities is to be organized: an exhibition dedicated to leading Czech writers Karel Čapek and Jaroslav Seifert to be seen from February to March, selection of Czech art by winners or prestigious Jindřich Chalupecký award will be hosted by Seoul National University Museum of Art until May and a Czech festival will take place in central Seoul in early May.
