SEOUL – Czech becomes a winner of Korea Times´ economic essay contest

Czech student of economics Ivana Tománková was announced the winner of the Sixth English Economic Essay Contest organized by the The Korea Times and sponsored by Woori Bank.

The Korea Times held an awarding ceremony on November 4, 2010 for the Sixth English Economic Essay Contest winners at the Westin Chosun Hotel in downtown Seoul. The winners were selected from a total of over 1,300 entries on the subject of Korea’s role in the G20 Seoul Summit and in representing non-G20 countries at the summit. One of the Grand Prizes went to Ivana Tománková, Czech student of Prague´s Vysoká škola ekonomická (the University of Economics) recently chosen as the best economics university in Central and Eastern Europe. The other first prize went to a Korean, Lee Ye-won, now an undergraduate at the University of Toronto, Canada.

Ivana Tománková´s essay titled “South Korea to defend the right to its ‘own’ development” was already published by The Korea Times on October 19, 2010 (www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/biz/2010/10/123_74778.html).

The Runner-Up Award was given to Adelide Kamanthe Mutinda, a Kenyan student working for her master’s at KDI School of Public Policy and Management. Mutinda who speaks and writes Korean fluently submitted an essay titled “Seoul should represent both G20 and non G20 countries.” Commendation Awards went to Moon Joo-won from Korea University; Russian Vadim Piatov, a foreign student studying at Seoul National University and Dutch student Evert Jan Gerhardus Jacobsen who studies at the Maasticht University in the Netherlands.


As Ms. Tománková could not attend the ceremony herself, it was accepted on her behalf by H. E. Mr. Jaroslav Olša, jr., Ambassador of the Czech Republic.

She received the award at the end of November 2010 at a small reception at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic from Director General of Economic Section Amb. Pavel Kafka
