Statement by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Mr. Jan Kohout on DPRK nuclear test

I strongly condemn the reported test of a nuclear explosive device carried out by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on 25 May. Such a test profoundly jeopardizes stability on the Korean peninsula and the region, and represents a severe threat to international peace and security. The test is a flagrant breach of the December 1991 North-South Denuclearization Declaration and of the UNSCR 1718.

The European Union and the whole international community have to react through the UN Security Council. The DPRK must refrain from any such activities, must renounce nuclear weapons and return immediately and without preconditions to the Six-Party Talks and comply with Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) obligations.
