JEJU – Czech Krtek and young artists at the exhibition

The very first Czech art exhibition on the island of Jeju is taking place in May 2011. An untypical combination of art works with Krtek (Little Mole), the most famous Czech animation hero of all times created more than half of the century by now 90-years-old Zdeněk Miler, and the works of five young and aspiring contemporary Czech comics authors and illustrators, are on show at Jeju Museum of Art.

A selection of pictures from two books about Krtek are beautifully framed in the first floor, next to the main entrance to Jeju Museum of Art. A special selection of works by five young Czech comics artists is also added – as a sample of a contemporary art aimed for children and young adults. The exhibition organized joingly by Jeju Museum of Art and the Embassy of the Czech Republic runs from April 30, 2011 to May 29, 2011. The main persons behind this historically first Czech exhibition at the island of Jeju, were director of the museum, artist Boo Hyun-Iland the museum´s curator, Sim Sung-su.

Jeju Museum of Art is a newly opened gallery in 2009 which is located a short 10 minute drive from the capital of Jeju Self-Governing Province - up the mountain, past Arboretum and across the Mysterious Road. It is itself a piece of art - a beautiful massive stone building surrounded by a shallow pool of water which by design, makes it appear to float - as the island of Jeju.

The very first Czech exhibition at Jeju was opened on April 30, 2011 and it was very much favourite spot to go for the children of Jeju on May 5, which is the official Korean holiday – the Children´s Day. The following day, on May 6, 2011, the press conference with Jaroslav Olša, jr., Ambassador of the Czech Republic, was held there, with a presence of a dozen journalists representing all local press.

May 2011 is a unique month for the Krtek. Not only that he has – for the first time in his life – visited the beautiful island of Jeju, but another exhibition promoting him is taking place in Daegu, the fourth biggest city of the Republic of Korea. Last – but definitely not the least – is his biggest voyage he is now undertaking, flying to space on board of NASA space shuttle mission STS-134 with astronaut Andrew Feustel.
