The EU Ambassador to Korea gave an introductory speech, followed by speeches by Ambassadors from Ireland, France, Sweden and the Czech Republic. Ambassador Gustav Slamečka represented Czechia at the conference. At the beginning of this speech, ambassador mentioned the issue of human rights in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed that respecting and upholding human rights will be key to the success of government efforts to curb the pandemic.

In his speech, the ambassador also recalled the experience of our country and the events of 1989, when the authoritarian communist regime transformed into a well-functioning and stable democracy after the Velvet Revolution and the Czech Republic became the independent state upholding human rights which Václav Havel dreamed of in his inaugural speech in 1990.

At international level, the Czech Republic supports the work of human rights organizations and mechanisms which play an important preventive role by bringing attention to the worsening human rights situations in the world and supporting implementation of international human rights commitments. Czechia is committed to playing a consistent and active role in the Human Rights Council, the General Assembly and other human rights organizations.
