Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) was a leading Czech artist who played a prominent role in shaping the aesthetics and birth of Art Nouveau at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. After moving to Paris, he achieved fame in December 1894 when he created a poster for Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress of the time, and her new play "Gismonda". Mucha's style became known for its typically bold lines, natural motifs and beautiful women, and gave rise to a new world view. Mucha's advertisement posters and decorative panels dominated the streets and living rooms of Paris. By 1900s, he had become one of the most famous artists in the world.
