2026 Czech Film Week opens, showcasing the charm of Czech inema Korean audiences

The 2026 Czech Film Week opened on March 31 at Seongsu Art Hall, marking the beginning of a special week that introduces Czech cinema and culture to audiences in Korea. The opening ceremony was attended by Czech Ambassador Ivan Jančárek, Michal Emanovský, Director of the Czech Center Seoul, Park Bongju, President of the Seongdong Foundation for Arts and Culture, and many other distinguished guests who gathered to celebrate and share the richness of Czech culture.

The opening event was celebrated with approximately 100 people including the distinguished guests and audiences. The event began with a performance by the Seongdong District Dream Orchestra, followed by welcoming remarks by President Park and congratulatory remarks by the Ambassador reflecting on the significance of this year’s festival and the importance of cultural exchange between the two countries.

The opening film, Sea of Hope (Moře na dvoře), warmly depicted the lives of individuals discovering new perspectives and possibilities through small changes in everyday life. The film charmed Korean audiences with its gentle humor and heartfelt moments, filling the theater with smiles and laughter and setting a warm tone for this year’s film week.

Running until April 4, the 2026 Czech Film Week presents a total of six contemporary Czech films spanning a wide range of genres, including drama, thriller, documentary, and animation. The lineup includes Waves (Vlny), which revisits a pivotal moment in Czechoslovak history; Havel Speaking, Can You Hear Me? (Tady Havel, slyšíte mě?), a documentary following the later years of former President Václav Havel; and After Party, a story of a young woman rebuilding her life amid unexpected financial hardship. Family audiences can enjoy beloved animations such as Pat & Mat and Tales from the Magic Garden (Pohádky po babičce), offering imaginative storytelling across generations. Notably, many of these films have never been released in Korea, making this week a rare opportunity for Korean viewers to enjoy the latest Czech films on the big screen.

This year’s festival is co-organized by the Czech Center Seoul, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Seoul, and the Seongdong Foundation for Arts and Culture, resulting in an even richer program. Above all, the successful hosting of the 2026 Czech Film Week was made possible thanks to the generous support of CEZ Group, a leading Czech energy company. CEZ has been an essential partner in Czech–Korean cooperation in nuclear energy and other fields, and its contribution to this year’s cultural event has added meaningful depth to the festival. Additionally, Budvar, the Czech national brewery, supported the opening ceremony by providing beer, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for guests to experience Czech hospitality.

Throughout the festival period, visitors can also enjoy a panel exhibition on UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Czech Republic, displayed in the lobby of Seongsu Art Hall. This exhibition allows audiences to explore Czech history, architecture, and artistic heritage alongside the film program, offering a multidimensional cultural experience. Information and reservations for the festival can be made through the YES24 ticketing platform, and admission is free with advance reservation.

The 2026 Czech Film Week serves not only as a film showcase but also as a meaningful opportunity to introduce the artistic depth of Czech culture and strengthen cultural ties between the two countries. The Czech Embassy and the Czech Centre Seoul will continue to present diverse programs that share the beauty and creativity of Czech culture with audiences in Korea.
