To mark Human Rights Day on December 10, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Seoul hosted its annual breakfast meeting. The event continues a long-standing tradition observed by Czech embassies worldwide, commemorating the historic 1988 breakfast where then French President Francois Mitterrand met with Czech human rights defenders including Vaclav Havel.
This year's breakfast focused on the theme of women's rights and gender equality. Representatives from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family of Korea, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Korean Women's Development Institute (KWDI), and various non-profit organisations focusing on supporting women's rights participated in the discussion. Topics included the gender pay gap, sexual violence and exploitation issues, support policies for single mothers, countermeasures against digital sexual crimes, gender equality policies and experiences, creating a space for meaningful mutual learning between the two countries.
Participants noted that Czechia and Korea face many common challenges, and that there is much to learn from each other in terms of policymaking, public awareness and social dialogue. Both sides expressed their commitment to continued cooperation and solidarity in advancing women's rights.
The meeting served as a valuable opportunity to reaffirm the importance of human rights and to highlight the necessity of international cooperation for gender equality and the protection of women's rights.
