On Wednesday, 27 April, students of the Centre of Bohemistics and Polonistics of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Latvia visited the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Riga accompanied by Nadežda Kopoloveca, assistant professor of Czech language. They were welcomed by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Latvia Jana Hynková and the First Secretary Marta Hušková. After a short welcome they and the students had a friendly discussion that was lasting for more than an hour. Ambassador Jana Hynková presented the Czech foreign policy priorities, while her deputy Marta Hušková briefly introduced the students with the economic and cultural relations between the Czech Republic and Latvia.
The students spoke about their experiences with learning the Czech language, why they decided to study it, and what they see as their future prospects. They also actively asked questions about the work of the Embassy, the duties of an ambassador, what a typical day of a diplomat looks like and what skills are required for work at the Embassy. In return, the students recommended various interesting places in Latvia that all foreigners should visit and came up with tips for gifts that visitors can take with them as a souvenir from Latvia.
Ambassador Hynková expressed how happy she is that the students have a personal interest in Czech language and that the tradition of teaching the Czech language at the University of Latvia continues. The Faculty of Humanities of the UL is the only state institution that offers Czech language courses. There are 16 students studying Czech in the academic year 2021/2022.
