New Health Centres in Takeo Province Funded by the Czech Republic

On 3rd June 2015 there were three new health centres opened in Takeo Province, financed by a unique debt resettlement agreement between the Czech Republic and the Royal Government of Cambodia. The ceremony was presided over by H.E. Mr. Mam Bunheng, Minister of Healh, and H.E. Mr. Vítězslav Grepl, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Kingdom of Cambodia. There were also two members of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic K. Rais a P. Šrámek and the director of the Czech Development Agency M. Kaplan presented.
This is the first completed project (in total value of USD 260,000) within the framework of debt resettlement based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Czech and Cambodian Ministries of Finance in 2008. In accordance with this Memorandum, the amount of USD 2.8 million of the debt was forgiven and the remaining amount of USD 833,000 was allocated for development projects in the fields of energy, environment, health and education.
Newly opened health centres in Ream Andouek, Thlea Prachum and Trapeang Kra Nhoung Communes will serve over 20 000 people in the area. Complementary project for awareness campaign in neighbouring communities and supplementary training to medical staff of new health centres will follow soon, implemented by the same Czech NGO People in Need. In June the project focusing on capacity building of medical staff at Takeo Referral Hospitals through visiting doctors from the Czech Republic implemented by Czech Caritas will start.
