New Laboratory Inaugurated at Cambodia University of Health Sciences with Czech Support

A cutting-edge simulation laboratory officially opened its doors at Cambodia University of Health Sciences (UHS), Campus 2 on 19th November 2024. Located on the first floor of the Medical Building. This new facility spans 76 square meters and is equipped with 25 advanced simulation tools designed to enhance medical device training for future biomedical engineers.

The inauguration ceremony was a significant occasion, attended by H.E. Martin Vávra, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Cambodia, and H.E. Prof. Yit Sunnara, Secretary of State for Health and Chairman of the UHS Board of Directors. Leaders from the National Hospital, UHS staff, and about 120 students were also present to celebrate this milestone.

Ambassador Vávra spoke about the lab's potential to give students invaluable hands-on experience with medical equipment, covering everything from operation to maintenance and repair. “This lab is more than a new room with advanced tools; it’s a bridge between theory and practice that will greatly enhance the quality of education in healthcare,” he said, highlighting the Czech Republic’s commitment to supporting Cambodia’s healthcare education.

Prof. Yit Sunnara echoed these thoughts, emphasizing that the Ministry of Health is prioritizing improvements in training health professionals and allied health workers. He stressed the importance of the Associate Degree in Biomedical Engineering, which plays a crucial role in preparing students for careers in hospitals and other healthcare settings. He also encouraged UHS to explore new academic pathways, raise awareness about biomedical engineering, and seek out resources for scholarships, technical support, and improved teaching. Moreover, he urged the Czech Republic to continue its partnership with UHS, particularly in training faculty and developing more specialized lab facilities.

The UHS Rector took the opportunity to express his gratitude for the ongoing Czech support, acknowledging how both technical and financial assistance has significantly improved the quality of the Biomedical Engineering program.

This laboratory is part of a broader collaborative effort between Cambodia and the Czech Republic, involving experts from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at the Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague. The project is led by Prof. Karel Roubík, Ph.D., alongside with project manager Mr. Šimon Walzel and promotion expert Mr. Ladislav Bis.
