The History of Czech Graphic Design in Phnom Penh: The IDENTITA Exhibition Showcased More Than a Century of Visual Culture

On Thursday, September 3, 2026, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Phnom Penh, in cooperation with the Bohemindo Cambodia association and the Raffles Hotel Le Royal, hosted a closing reception to mark the end of the exhibition “IDENTITY – The Story of Czech Graphic Design”. Representatives of the diplomatic corps, Cambodian cultural and educational institutions, and the Czech community in the country gathered for the occasion in the Empress Room at the Raffles Hotel.
The exhibition, which took place from August 24 to September 3, showcased more than a century of development in Czech graphic design as a field that shapes public spaces, education, the media, and national representation.
The exhibition covered everything from typography, book design, and posters to national symbols and packaging design. One of the central exhibits was Rostislav Vaněk’s 1984 Prague Metro system, which demonstrates the combination of timeless design, functionality, and everyday service to the public.
The exhibition in Cambodia was part of the broader IDENTITA project, which introduces the general public to both the past and present forms of Czech graphic design through exhibition projects, a book, a television series, and a feature-length documentary film.
