
Charity Concert "Czechs for Sri Lanka"

A charity concert in aid of victims of terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday titled "Czechs for Sri Lanka" was held at the Hotel Hilton in Prague on Saturday June 1st, 2019. Nearly 2.8 millions Sri Lankan Rupees were raised during the event to support victims of terrorist attacks.

Organised by the Czech Centres network and the Caritas Czech Republic under the auspices of the Czech Foreign Minister Tomas Petricek, the concert was an oppourtunity to raise money to help families who have been affected by the act of untorelable act of violence.

It was featured by outstanding Zlin Philharmonic Orchestra of Bohuslav Martinu helmed by Prague-based Indian conductor Debashish Chaudhuri and joined by the brilliant soloist Marketa Cukrova.

The evening's programme included the “Nimrod” variation from Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, Biblical Songs by Antonin Dvorak and Beethoven's Seventh Symphony.

The concert was graced by the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic Karel Havlicek, Foreign Affairs State Secretary Miloslav Stasek and Chargé d'Affaires of Sri Lanka based in Vienna Irosha Cooray.

Speaking also on the occasion, Czech Ambassador to Sri Lanka Milan Hovorka, upon whose initiative the concert was held, said that he would rush to Colombo to convey the message of solidarity and closeness of the Czech people with friendly Sri Lankans.
