
Czech Ambassador to India met with Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka

From March 23 to 28, 2025, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to India, H. E. Eliska Zigova, undertook a five-day official visit to Sri Lanka aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the Czech Republic and Sri Lanka. During her visit, Ambassador Zigova held meetings with representatives of the Sri Lankan government, including Prime Minister Dr. H. E. Harini Amarasuriya, Minister of Foreign Affairs H. E. Vijitha Herath, and Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe. Ambassador Zigova discussed opportunities for further cooperation in the area of economy, culture, education, labor migration, tourism, and justice. Ambassador Zigova and her team also met with the Director of Consular Affairs Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka to address visa conditions for Czech citizens traveling to Sri Lanka for tourism.
On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka H. E. Harini Amarasuriya received Ambassador Zigova at the official residence of the Prime Minister in Colombo. During the courtesy call, Ambassador Zigova highlighted the historical ties between the Czech Republic and Sri Lanka as well as the Czech Republic’s humanitarian and development support to the country. She also expressed the Czech Republic’s interest in deepening cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade and education.
On Thursday, March 27, 2025, Ambassador Zigova met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka H. E. Vijitha Herath whereshe presented the Czech Republic’s foreign policy priorities toward Sri Lanka. The Ambassador emphasized interest in expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, high-level bilateral visits, tourism, and agriculture. Ambassador Zigova also briefed the Sri Lankan side on the current security situation in Europe in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine and its broader impact on the South Asian region.
Earlier, on Monday, March 24, 2025, Ambassador Zigova met with Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe who expressed interest in enhancing cooperation in the field of justice. Ambassador Zigova thanked the Attorney General for the continued support and cooperation of Sri Lankan authorities in implementing the bilateral agreement between Czech Republic and Sri Lanka on the transfer of sentenced persons signed in 2023.
One of the key priorities of the visit was a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka regarding visa conditions for Czech nationals visiting Sri Lanka for tourism. Sri Lanka remains a popular travel destination for the Czechs with approximately 20,000 visitors annually. The topic of visa policy was discussed with the Director of the Consular Division of the Ministry who confirmed that Czech citizens are exempt from the visa fee for visas issued on arrival.
