Minister of Foreign Affairs, T. Petříček, signed a declaration of the Alliance for Multilateralism on Strengthening the multilateral health architecture, which follows the virtual meeting of foreign ministers within the organization on June 26, 2020 and summarizes the main priorities. The Alliance is an initiative for support of multilateral cooperation, which the Czech Republic joined in September 2019.
The priorities contained in the declaration are meant to start a discussion on improving collective readiness and ability to act in crisis in the area of health architecture and on strengthening the coordination role of the World Health Organization (WHO), while awaiting the results of complex independent evaluation of the response of the WHO to the COVID-19 pandemic based on the decision of the World Health Assembly (WHA) from May 2020.
The 5 priorities of the declaration are as follows:
- Strengthening health systems at the national level, in order to ensure better resilience of countries to health crises and maintain access to essential health services.
- Strengthening the implementation of the IHR (International Health Regulations) and the accountability of States Parties which are responsible for their implementation.
- Improvement of the public health risk notification system, as required by the IHR.
- A comprehensive approach to global health, taking account of the increasingly strong links between human and animal health, in the context of the biodiversity crisis.
- Improved financial margin of maneuver for the WHO.
