Czech Republic supports the High Commissioner for Refugees in helping Ukraine and beyond

The Executive Committee of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) met from 14 to 18 October 2024.
During the general debate, the Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic, Václav Bálek, took the floor to appreciate the work of the organization, incl. innovative approaches to processing asylum applications. He also recalled Czech aid to war-torn Ukraine and long-term cooperation with UNHCR in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
UNHCR predicts a record number of forcibly displaced and stateless persons of nearly 140 million in 2025. The High Commissioner, Filippo Grandi, emphasized that as the number of armed conflicts grows, so will the number of refugees. He called for peaceful solutions to conflicts, compliance with international law and protection of civilians, including humanitarian workers.
The High Commissioner further mentioned UNHCR's readiness to support European countries in managing migration flows to Europe, with emphasis on close cooperation with source and transit countries along different migration routes.
