Disaster risk reduction (DRR) is one of the priority agendas of the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic in multilateral Geneva. From 2 to 6 June 2025, the 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP) took place in Geneva with the participation of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Eduard Hulicius.
Held every three years, the GP provides a valuable opportunity to assess results and determine future directions in the field of DRR. Czechia has been actively engaged in this area, including through the Permanent Mission in Geneva, which works closely with partner countries and Geneva-based organizations (such as UNDRR, IFRC, WMO, and ITU), with a strong focus on the use of new technologies in DRR and the synergies of various stakeholders. A practical example was the September seminar on digital technologies in DRR, which also served as preparation for the GP. Additional follow-up events are planned for June and the autumn of this year.
At the GP, Deputy Minister Hulicius participated in the ministerial roundtable on DRR financing, joined a discussion focused on risk management in Africa, and held a bilateral meeting with the Director of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Paola Albrito, who commended the Czech Republic's long-standing and consistent engagement in the DRR agenda.
The Czech footprint at the GP was also strengthened by the participation of People in Need, which presented an early warning system implemented in Cambodia and now being extended to other developing countries, such as Laos, through the Innovation Platform.
