Visit of Foreign Deputy Minister Martin Tlapa

Deputy Minister of the Czech Republic for Non-European countries, economic diplomacy and development assistance Mr. Martin Tlapa visited Philippines on 16 – 18 April 2018, in order to discuss bilateral cooperation with representatives of government of the Philippines.

Czech Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Martin Tlapa visited Manila for three days in order to discuss Philippine-Czech relations.

Martin Tlapa was received by Arthur Tugade, Secretary of Transportation, with whom he discussed possible cooperation in the area of transportation for Czech companies and presented options of aviation programme.

During the meeting with Secretary of Trade and Industry Ramon Lopez, both sides discussed how to further strengthen economic relations. Total bilateral trade between the two countries reached USD 283.32 million in 2016, making the Czech Republic the country’s 31st biggest trading partner.

Undersecretary Teehankee handed over the Note conveying the Philippine Government’s completion of its domestic requirements for the entry into force of the Philippines – Czech Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECA), signed in Manila on 31 July 2017. The Agreement provides for the establishment of a Joint Economic Commission which will serve as a platform to discuss trade, investments, economic cooperation and other related matters.

Deputy Minister Tlapa also presented a Czech system of economic diplomacy at the round-table organized by a Board of Investment. A wide range of topics related to strengthening of bilateral relations were discussed, whereas economic projects, investment and trade were dominant. He also presented Director Jeremy Barns and Deputy Director Ana MT Labrador of National Museum of the Philippines with the Medal of Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Deputy Foreign Minister Tlapa conveyed the interest of the Czech Republic to invest in the Philippines, particularly in the fields of defense, energy, water treatment, transport, and agriculture.

He also discussed labor cooperation in light of the Czech Republic’s decision to hire overseas workers from the Philippines which will enable to deploy 1,000 workers to the Czech Republic every year starting this year.

Mr. Martin Klepetko, Director for Asia and Pacific Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, and officials from the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Manila accompanied the Deputy Foreign Minister.
