From 12 to 14 November 2025, Lusaka hosted the EU–ZM Lobito Corridor Global Gateway Forum, a major platform advancing private sector engagement around the Lobito Corridor – a flagship Global Gateway initiative that aims to connect Zambia’s agricultural and mining regions to global markets via enhanced transport, energy, and logistics infrastructure.
The Corridor forms part of the EU’s broader strategy to strengthen sustainable connectivity, support inclusive growth and deepen economic cooperation between the European Union and Zambia by mobilising private investment and fostering business partnerships across sectors.
Czechia was proud to field the second largest business delegation at the Forum, reflecting strong interest from Czech companies across key economic areas. The delegation included firms and institutions engaged in critical raw materials, energy, and agriculture, highlighting Czech expertise relevant to the Lobito Corridor’s priority tracks. Participating organisations were: Czech Geology Survey; University of Life Sciences in Prague; MDP GEO, s.r.o.; Draslovka; Photon Energy; TRL Space Systems s.r.o.; AtomTrace a.s.; GISAT s.r.o.; ŠKODA AUTO; OPV; alongside civil society and healthcare businesses such as Caritas Czech Republic; People in Need; Czech Health Technology Institute; LINET Group; and Royax. These participants explored business opportunities, sector dialogues and matchmaking with European and Zambian partners.
High-level engagement was a hallmark of the Forum. The Czech presence included European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela, underlining the strategic importance of Czech participation within the Team Europe / Global Gateway framework, and Karl Nehammer, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank, highlighting strong EU financial support for sustainable investment in the region. The Czech delegation was led by First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Jiří Kozák, who took part in high-level panels and conducted substantive work meetings, including discussions with the Ministry of Health of Zambia. During his mission, Deputy Minister Kozák also visited the MEDEVAC mission at the National Heart Hospital, engaging with Czech and Zambian professionals working together on cardiac surgeries, and attended the Mapaton event of the Team Europe project SLIM, which focuses on environmental open source data management and training the next generation of Zambian experts.
On the sidelines of the Forum, Czech companies made important contributions to expanding EU-Global Gateway interventions in Zambia. Draslovka and TRL Space Systems delivered focused presentations on proposals to strengthen EU engagement in the critical raw minerals sector. Additionally, supported by Czech Aid, the Czech innovative company AtomTrace delivered two geological laboratory machines to Copperbelt University, a donation that aims to enhance local scientific capacity and geological research.
Complementing these activities, the Czech Health Technology Institute hosted a technical side event during the Forum to discuss and refine another Czech-led initiative under Global Gateway, focusing on support to primary and neonatal care with strong involvement from the European private sector. These exchanges underscored Czechia’s commitment to practical, sector-wide cooperation that contributes to Zambia’s sustainable development.
