Lusaka, Zambia – June 13, 2024. In effort to foster cultural understanding and raise awareness about the challenges faced by people with albinism, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Lusaka, in collaboration with cultural anthropologist Kateřina Mildnerová and professional photographer Antonio Cossa, organized a poignant event on June 13, 2024. The event, held at Alliance Française Lusaka, coincided with International Albinism Awareness Day and marked the opening of the captivating photo exhibition titled "Born Different."
The project "Born Different" is a remarkable collaboration between Kateřina Mildnerová, a Czech anthropologist, and Antonio Cossa, a Mozambican photojournalist. The initiative is a unique fusion of art and science, blending cultural anthropology with the powerful medium of photography. It is the culmination of extensive fieldwork conducted in Zambia and Benin between 2023 and 2024. The project not only showcases a travelling photographic exhibition but also includes lectures and an upcoming popular science book.
Kateřina Mildnerová and Antonio Cossa took the stage to present their collaborative work. Mildnerová, with her profound understanding of cultural anthropology, and Cossa, with his keen photographic eye, provided an in-depth look into their project. They shared their experiences from the field, highlighting the socio-cultural contexts of albinism in Zambia and Benin. The photo exhibition, a centerpiece of the event, showcased a series of powerful images capturing the lives of individuals with albinism. Each photograph told a story of resilience, hope, and the daily struggles faced by these individuals. The visual narratives were complemented by anthropological insights provided by Mildnerová, offering a holistic view of the subject.
In the lecture that accompanied the exhibition, Mildnerová delved into the anthropological aspects of albinism, discussing the myths, misconceptions, and cultural practices surrounding the condition. She emphasized the need for education and awareness to combat the stigma and discrimination that individuals with albinism often face. Cossa, on the other hand, shared his journey as a photojournalist and the challenges of capturing such sensitive subjects.
The "Born Different" project aims to continue its journey, with plans for the travelling photographic exhibition to be displayed in various countries. The forthcoming popular science book, which will document the fieldwork and insights from Zambia and Benin, is eagerly anticipated by the academic and artistic communities.
The event at Alliance Française Lusaka was a significant step towards raising awareness about albinism and promoting a more inclusive society. By blending the realms of art and science, Mildnerová and Cossa have created a powerful platform for dialogue and understanding. The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Lusaka remains committed to supporting such initiatives that celebrate diversity and foster cross-cultural understanding. The success of the "Born Different" event serves as an inspiration for future collaborations that bridge the gap between art, science, and cultural anthropology.
