Note: The Embassy processes around 100 emails per day. We will respond as soon as possible, but replies may not be immediate.

Required Supporting Documents

The most important document for registering a marriage or partnership that took place in the United Kingdom is the UK civil registry certificate (marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate).

This document must first be legalised with an apostille issued by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

It must then be officially translated into Czech, including the apostille. Both the original document and the apostille must be translated, and the translation must be securely attached to the documents. Translations prepared by the applicant are not accepted.

Only the following types of translations are accepted:

  • ● If the translation is prepared by a translator based in the UK (bearing a UK translator’s stamp, or a Czech stamp that is not from a court-appointed Czech translator), the Embassy must additionally certify the translation. This certification is subject to a consular fee.
  • ● If the translation is completed by a Czech court-appointed (sworn) translator (identified by a round stamp with the Czech national emblem), no further certification by the Embassy is required. Such translations can also be arranged in the UK (see the list of translators).

A list of translators who have provided their details to the Embassy is available.

Important notice:
The Embassy has recently seen an increase in cases where private intermediaries offer apostille and translation services. In many such cases, submitted documents contained errors, such as:

  • ● apostilles issued for incorrect documents
  • ● missing certification clauses in translations
  • ● translations prepared in Slovak instead of Czech

For these reasons, we strongly recommend arranging the apostille independently and using authorised translators.

  • ● UK marriage certificate (apostilled) + Czech translation
  • ● Valid passport or ID card of both spouses
  • ● Birth certificates of both spouses

All documents except the UK marriage certificate will be returned immediately after submission.
