How to proceed if your marriage was dissolved in the United Kingdom and this fact needs to be registered in the Czech civil registry.
When applying for the registration of a divorce or the dissolution of a registered partnership in the Special Registry Office (Zvláštní matrika) in Brno, the following documents must be submitted:
- ● A valid Czech national identity card or a valid Czech passport.
- ● A Czech marriage certificate and birth certificate.
- ● The original UK divorce document, bearing an apostille, or a document confirming the dissolution of a registered partnership, also bearing an apostille, together with its Czech translation (translation of the apostille is not required).
The divorce document is issued by the court that granted the divorce.
If you receive the divorce decree from a UK court electronically (by email), it must first be certified by a notary public (not a solicitor). Only after this certification can it be provided with an APOSTILLE.
If you have the divorce decree in paper form, it can be submitted directly for apostille certification.
A divorce document issued electronically cannot be certified in this way directly. If this is your situation, we will provide further guidance by email or telephone upon request.
Translations prepared by the applicant cannot be accepted. An official translation must be submitted, prepared by a translator who holds the required qualifications and authorization for this activity.
Given the relative complexity of English legal terminology used in divorce judgments, we recommend having the judgment translated by a Czech court-certified translator (the translation will bear a round stamp with the Czech state emblem).
The Embassy does not certify translations of divorce judgments.
Certification by a Czech court-certified translator can also be obtained in the United Kingdom. Please refer to the list of translators.
Due to capacity constraints, all applications are accepted only during pre-arranged appointments.
