Czcehia continues to strengthen its diplomatic presence in Syria. Vítězslav Pivoňka, a long-time Czech diplomat, will soon take over the management of the Czech embassy in Damascus as chargé d'affaires.
“Czechia's diplomatic engagement in Syria is closely tied to the role of the protecting power for the United States in the country. This makes it essential for our mission to be led by an experienced diplomat. The future of Syria is not only significant for its people but for the entire Middle East region. I wish Mr. Pivoňka every success in his new role,” said Minister Jan Lipavský.
“The new history of the whole region is being written in Syria today. To be there is for me a professional challenge and an honour with all the responsibility,” added Vítězslav Pivoňka on his posting.
Czechia has been helping the hard-tested people of Syria for a long time. Practically since the beginning of the civil war in the country, we have been providing humanitarian and stabilisation assistance to the most vulnerable groups of the population, which, among other things, contributes to alleviating migration pressures from the region. In 2024, the Czech Government approved the continuation of the Reconstruction Programme in the Middle East region for a further three years, and our diplomatic presence in Syria is essential for its successful implementation.
