On Tuesday, 23 April 2024, the Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Lilongwe was inaugurated after three years, with a mandate for the entire Republic of Malawi. The new Honorary Consul, Mr. Jan Duchoslav, was inaugurated by the Secretary of State, Mr. Radek Rubeš, during his working trip to Malawi.
During the visit, the State Secretary met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malawi, Ms. Nancy Tembo.
"Our two countries are united in their efforts towards sustainable development based on political stability and peace. The reopening of the Honorary Consulate underlines the Czech commitment to strengthening these ties," said State Secretary Rubeš.
The Honorary Consulate will serve as a bridge between the Czechia and Malawi and will enable the deepening of development cooperation. It will be an essential link for Czech businesses seeking opportunities in Malawi to support the strengthening of the economic relationship.
The newly appointed Honorary Consul, Duchoslav, has been a research fellow at the non-profit International Food Policy Research Institute in Lilongwe since 2018. A year earlier, he earned a PhD in Development Economics from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He gained reputation while working on projects at this university in Uganda, Mali, Bangladesh and Sierra Leone, among others, where he conducted research on development policies in the areas of food security, social protection, resilience and rural transformation. Malawi is a second home for him, having put down roots there many years ago, and he and his Malawian wife are raising two children.
