Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hosted an International Conference on Peace in Ukraine

On Monday, 15 April 2024, the Czernin Palace hosted a working meeting on the Ukrainian peace plan, in particular its first point - nuclear and radiation safety.

The Czech Republic, along with France, Japan and Sweden, chairs the working group. It invited some 70 experts and diplomats representing 24 countries and the European Commission to Prague. Among the countries represented were the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany and Spain.

"Russia is still illegally occupying the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and thus creating risks related to nuclear safety," said Eduard Hulicius, Deputy Foreign Minister, at the opening of the meeting, adding: "This kind of behaviour cannot go unanswered by the international community, it must not become the new international norm."

In his speech, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko thanked Czech diplomacy for organising the gathering. He also mentioned the wider geopolitical context, noting that "a potential nuclear incident at the Zaporizhzhia NPP would lead to a global loss of confidence in nuclear energy and a decline in its importance. We need to recognise that nuclear energy plays a key role in the transition to green energy sources". According to Halushchenko, Russia has no interest in the transition to renewable energy sources because a significant part of its income comes from the sale of fossil fuels.

Participants at the Prague peace meeting exchanged views on various forms of assistance to ensure the safety of Ukrainian nuclear power plants in the face of Russian aggression. They also agreed on the need to develop an international plan to assist Ukraine, focusing on the restart of the the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

The conclusions of the meeting will be used in the preparation of the Ukraine Peace Summit scheduled to take place in mid-June in Switzerland.
