On Wednesday 22 May 2025, celebrations were held at the Czernin Palace to mark Africa Day. Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský opened the programme with his speech. The subsequent panel discussion was attended by the event's main guests Ragnheiður Elín Árnadóttir, Director of the OECD Development Centre, and João Gomes Cravinho, EU Special Representative for the Sahel. The event took place as part of the National Development Days.
“Africa is becoming an increasingly important geopolitical player. Its rapidly growing economies offer many opportunities for cooperation. At the same time, they represent a promising partner for the future,” said Minister Jan Lipavský in his opening speech.
During the day, a series of roundtables were held at the Foreign Ministry headquarters, where representatives of diplomatic corps from African countries, Czech companies, non-profit organisations and academia discussed modern forms of partnership between Czechia and the European Union with Africa. The debates focused on the transfer of cutting-edge Czech technologies and know-how to the African continent and their connection with the development solutions offered. They also focused on the key area of education and support for the young African generation as a future agent of change, scientific and technical cooperation, protection of natural and cultural heritage and support for civil society.
The National Development Days continue on Friday 23 May with a public part in the garden of the Czernin Palace. More information about the event, including an invitation to the public part, can be found on the MFA website.
