Minister Lipavský Visited South Korea

Bilateral meetings with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, awarding of the Medal for Merit in Diplomacy and participation in a ministerial panel at an international conference. This was Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský's working trip to South Korea, which took place from 8 to 10 September 2024.

The trip to the country, which is one of Czechia's top 20 trading partners, began on Monday 9 September with a meeting with the country's Prime Minister, Tonksu Han. The main topics of the talks were strategic communication and new opportunities for cooperation, which arise mainly thanks to the participation of the South Korean company KHNP in the largest tender in the modern Czech history - the construction of two new units of the Dukovany nuclear power plant.

This was followed by a meeting between Minister Lipavský and his Korean counterpart, Tchejol Choe. "South Korea is our third largest trading partner outside Europe and the fourth largest foreign investor in Czechia. During my visit to Seoul, I spoke with Minister Choe about new opportunities for cooperation in nuclear energy, industry and science," the Czech diplomatic chief said after the meeting.

The programme on Tuesday 10 September continued with the presentation of the Medal for Merit in Diplomacy, awarded annually by the Minister of Foreign Affairs to former Ambassador to the Czech Republic Hajong Mun. The delegation then moved on to the REAIM International Conference on the Use and Regulation of Artificial Intelligence in Military and Defence. There, Minister Lipavský met with a number of counterparts from other countries and selected heads of defence ministries.

In his address to the ministerial panel, he pointed out that coordination and the ability to share expertise among partners are among the essential elements of combating new hybrid threats. "We must work together to address the challenges posed by new technologies. We need principles and international standards and regulations to ensure responsible use," Minister Lipavský appealed in his national address.
