Minister Lipavský took part in the EXPO 2025 opening ceremony

From April 11 to April 13, 2025, minister Jan Lipavský visited Osaka, Japan. During his trip, he represented Czechia at the opening of the World EXPO 2025 and opened the Czech national pavilion.

Over the next six months, Czechia will present itself at the World Expo with a unique, modern pavilion made of wood and glass in the shape of a spiral. Up to three million visitors are expected to pass through the national pavilion by October. Inside, they will be able to experience a contemporary artistic reinterpretation of works by Alfons Mucha, created by painter Jakub Matuška, also known as Maskér. His paintings are accompanied by a unique installation by renowned Czech glass artist René Plesl and audiovisual content produced by the Czech studio Lunchmeat. The pavilion also features a Czech restaurant offering a bold fusion of Czech and Japanese cuisine, as well as Pilsner beer – a favorite among the Japanese.

Throughout the six months, the Czech pavilion will host a wide range of cultural performances, from Czech music to theatre and other live acts. A key element of the Czech presence at EXPO will be the presentation of Czech innovation, sectoral showcases by Czech companies, introductions to Czech universities, and the promotion of Czechia as a travel destination.

In addition to the national pavilion, Czechia is also making its mark at the World Expo in Japan with the Forest of Civilizations – a striking installation by the company Subfossil Oak, composed of oak trunks that are several thousand years old.

"Today, we are facing many challenges, and platforms like EXPO can help us find the much-needed dialogue. Let us bring together people, ideas, and cultures to show that we share more in common than we might think," said the minister during Saturday’s official opening ceremony.

On Sunday, Minister Lipavský, as the head of Czech diplomacy, formally opened the Czech national pavilion at EXPO in Japan. "Japan holds a special place in the history of World Expos, and we want to build on the success of the Czechoslovak pavilion from 1970. The Czech pavilion tells amazing stories that connect the Czech and Japanese nations – stories that range from a modern take on Alfons Mucha’s talent to Czech glassmaking, a flagship of Czech craftsmanship," added the foreign minister.
