Minister Lipavský to Attend EU Foreign Affairs Council Meeting in Luxembourg

Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský will represent Czechiaat the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meeting in Luxembourg on Monday 14 October 2024. The main topics will be the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine and the tense situation in the Middle East. An informal discussion with the British Foreign Secretary and the situation in Georgia, Moldova and the Horn of Africa are also on the agenda.

For the first talking point, the new Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, will join the EU diplomatic chiefs via videoconference to brief his counterparts on the current situation in Ukraine. The politicians will discuss military aid to the invaded country, including an assessment of the use of money from frozen Russian assets. They will also discuss the preparations of Ukraine for the coming winter.

The next item on the agenda will be an informal working lunch with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, at which the ministers will discuss common geopolitical and security issues. During the item on current affairs, they will discuss the pre-election situation in Moldova and Georgia, the security situation in Somalia, as well as post-election developments in Venezuela.

This will be followed by a debate on the Middle East. EU diplomatic chief Josep Borrell will brief his colleagues on the results of his trip to the region. The ministers will then focus specifically on the military escalation between Israel and the Lebanese terrorist group, Hezbollah.
