On 29-30 May 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský visited Bratislava, where he addressed the GLOBSEC 2023 Bratislava Forum security conference. In the Slovak capital, he also held talks with his Slovak and Austrian counterparts within the framework of the Slavkov Format (S3). The S3 foreign ministers also met with their Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen.
The main themes of this year's GLOBSEC conference, a meeting place for the world's top politicians, think tanks and international organisations, were support for Ukraine, European resilience in the context of war and global dialogue on conflict mitigation. "This war is not just about Putin, it is about Russian imperialism. Russia does not know where its borders are. We have to be ready to counter Russia's influence and above all we have to protect Europe from Russian imperialism," Minister Lipavsky said at the panel on the geopolitical consequences of a united European stance on Russian aggression in Ukraine.
After his speech at the conference, Minister Lipavský then moved on to a meeting of the Slavkov format with his Slovak counterpart Miroslav Wlachovský and Austrian Minister Alexander Schallenberg. "We confirmed that it is necessary to extend sanctions, both against Russia and Belarus. Europe must continue to support Ukraine, not only in the counter-offensive, but until the entire territory, including Crimea, is liberated," Lipavský said after the meeting. The minister also said that the S3 foreign ministers will continue their joint trips and outlined that the next stop will be Skopje later this summer.
The following day, the ministers of the Czechia, Slovakia and Austria met with their Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen. They discussed developments in the Middle East, Israel's view of events in Ukraine and the possibilities for cooperation between the S3 countries and Israel in the field of innovation. "With the Israeli minister, we discussed cooperation and mutual support at the multilateral level as well as the current security situation in the Middle East," Minister Lipavský added.
On the margins of his visit to Bratislava, Minister Lipavský met with Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Olga Stefanishyna, with whom he discussed not only the determination of Ukrainians to fight for their freedom and their country, but also Ukraine's future in the EU and NATO.
