On Thursday, 12 December 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský received the stamp and seal used during the signing of the Protocol on the Termination of the Warsaw Pact from Hana Hlaváčková, President of the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute (CSFI). The institute was in possession of these two types during the last decades.
"I am very pleased that we have managed to complete this valuable collection of archival material. Now we can begin the process of declaring the Protocol on the Dissolution of the Warsaw Pact an archival cultural monument," minister Lipavský said at the ceremony. The stamp and seal were presented at the beginning of a traditional event organised by the Foreign Ministry at the end of the year to thank its partners, institutions and NGOs for their cooperation in the field of compatriot relations.
"The signing of the Protocol on the Dissolution of the Warsaw Pact brought to a close a period in our history that not only divided Europe but also distanced compatriots from their Czech homeland. Today, our politics seeks to unite and remove the ties broken by history. In this context, I highly appreciate the promotion of postal voting in elections for Czechs abroad," the Czech diplomatic chief added.
The signing of the protocol on the termination of the so-called Warsaw Pact, officially the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, took place on 1 July 1991 in the Great Hall of the Czernin Palace. The original is stored in the archives of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was on display on this occasion.
