Minister Lipavský Received the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Czernin Palace

On Thursday, 16 May 2024, Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský met with Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis at the Czernin Palace. It was the first bilateral visit to the Czech Republic for the Greek diplomatic chief, who became a member of the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis after the parliamentary elections held in June 2023.

"Greece is one of the most popular summer destinations for Czech tourists. According to our estimates, over 640,000 Czech tourists visited Greece last year. But it's not just tourism that is becoming more and more intense. I am pleased to see that investment activities of Czech companies in Greece have also been growing in recent years. Some Czech investments exceed the value of 1 billion euros," said the head of Czech diplomacy Jan Lipavský.

Minister Lipavský also mentioned that Czech firefighters have repeatedly helped Greece in the past years to fight devastating fires. In case Greece asks for help in the future, the Czech side has two helicopters ready for aerial firefighting with a capacity of three thousand litres of water.

The ministers also discussed the situation in Ukraine, Russian aggression and cooperation in the energy and pharmaceutical industries. They also discussed Greece's role in the Eastern Mediterranean region, including with regard to illegal migration. "Greece plays a key role in the fight against illegal migration. The Czech Republic is supporting the operation of safe zones for unaccompanied child migrants at two locations in Greece, and the government has therefore decided on a contribution of 25 million Czech crowns for this year," Minister Lipavský said.
