Minister Timčo Mucunski visited Prague on Tuesday, 5 November 2024, where he held a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský. This was the first bilateral visit after the appointment of Minister Timčo Mucunski to the post in June 2024. The two diplomatic chiefs discussed the possibilities for further development of political and economic relations, North Macedonia's integration into the EU, regional cooperation and the situation in the Western Balkans region.
Relations have traditionally been at a good level, with growing momentum in the economic field. In recent years, cooperation in the areas of security and migration and defence has been an important aspect.
"Economic diplomacy projects that help Czech companies to establish contacts with partners from Northern Macedonia are also working well. An example is the company LOM Praha, which is involved in the modernisation of helicopters according to NATO standards. Another successful company is Škoda Auto, which has supplied cars to the North Macedonian police," said Minister Lipavský.
The Czech Police in North Macedonia under the Frontex agency should not be overlooked in mutual relations. On the basis of a request from the Minister of the Interior of North Macedonia, the first contingent of the Police of the Czech Republic comprising 27 police officers was deployed to the country in December 2015 and February 2016. With thirty officers, the Czech contingent has long been one of the largest of all EU Member States.
"I assured Minister Mucunski that Czechia fully supports the Government of Northern Macedonia in its efforts to make progress in the accession negotiations. However, North Macedonia needs to implement the necessary reforms. Part of this process includes the resolution of the bilateral dispute with Bulgaria and the adoption of the necessary changes to the Macedonian constitution," the Czech diplomatic chief said in this context.
