On Thursday, 29 August 2024, an informal meeting of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs took place in Brussels. The Czech delegation was led by Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský. The diplomatic chiefs discussed the Russian war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. They also exchanged views on foreign policy issues with the Turkish Foreign Minister.
The discussion on Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine took place in the personal presence of Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, who reported on the latest developments on the battlefield. Minister Jan Lipavský called for further military support for the invaded country and informed about the steps taken by the Czech Republic in this regard.
The head of Czech diplomacy also called for the adoption of the Czech proposal to restrict the movement of persons with Russian diplomatic cover in the Schengen area. According to him, the Russian diplomatic network serves to support espionage and hybrid activities, adding that there are several thousand such persons in Europe. "There is a group of countries that support this proposal: Romania, Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands and the three Baltic countries. We need to expand this group and talk to those who are still reticent," Minister Lipavský added.
The next item on the agenda was the situation in the Middle East. Minister Lipavský expressed concern about the escalating security situation on the Israeli-Lebanese border and worries about the continuing threat from Iran and its allies. At the same time, he supported the ongoing international negotiations for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. He recalled that the Czech Republic takes the humanitarian situation in Palestine seriously and is working with partners to help improve it.
During a working lunch with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, an exchange of views on common foreign policy issues took place. Minister Lipavský supported the resumption of negotiations on the modernisation of the Customs Union, of which Turkey is a part, as soon as the necessary conditions are met. The discussion also touched on the Russian aggression against Ukraine and other topical issues.
The leader of the Venezuelan opposition, Edmundo González, joined the final item by videoconference. The foreign ministers discussed the unstable political situation in Venezuela following the fraudulent presidential elections in July this year.
