Minister Lipavský Met with Alenka Soukup, Donor of the London Estate of Jan Masaryk

On Monday, September 15, 2025, Minister Jan Lipavský opened Masaryk Week with a meeting with Alenka Soukup to thank her fordonating Jan Masaryk's art collection. The collection is part ofthe exhibition “Immortales, Through the Eyes of Time,” which Minister Lipavský officially opened at the Tuscan Palace on the same day. Together with Alenka Soukup, he also paid tribute to Alice Masaryková and Marcia Davenport.

In the presence of French Ambassador Stéphane Crouzat and British Ambassador Matt Field, Minister Lipavský thanked Alenka Soukup for her decision to donate the collection of art objects from Jan Masaryk's London apartment. "I would like to not only thank you, but also express my gratitude for her generous gift, which transcends cultural and historical significance and touches the very heart of our national story. The collection is not only a testament to the richness of our culture, but above all to the deep interpersonal relationships that connected the Masaryk family with the leading artists of their time," said Minister Lipavský.

Alenka Soukup's father, Lumír Soukup, was Masaryk's personal secretary and managed to recover artworks that had previously belonged to the Czechoslovak foreign minister at auctions in the United Kingdom. After Lumír Soukup emigrated, the Soukup family lived in the United Kingdom and then in France. Mrs. Soukup decided to keep this surname for future generations of her family. Today, she received a certificate of regained citizenship from Minister Lipavský.   "Your decision is not only an expression of her deep relationship with our country, but also a personal gesture of return – a return home, a return to her roots. I appreciate the opportunity to thank her personally and present her with this certificate," said the Czech foreign minister.

After the meeting, Jan Lipavský, together with Alenka Soukup and the ambassadors of France and the UK, stopped and laid flowers at the memorial plaques of Alice Masaryková and Marcia Davenport, who are significantly connected with the legacy of Jan Masaryk.

Minister Lipavský then attended the opening of Patrik Hábl's exhibition “Immortales, Through the Eyes of Time,” which took place in the Stables of the Tuscan Palace. This unique project, under the auspices of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, combines Hábl's reinterpretation of historical works with portraits and symbolic images from the ministry's collections.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is dedicating the entire week to a September program focusing on the importance of the Masaryk family for democracy and the state. The culmination of the joint work of several institutions will be Friday's opening of the envelope containing T.G.M.'s last words dedicated to Jan Masaryk, which is being prepared by the presidential office in Lány.
