Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský concluded his working trip in the USA, where he represented Czechia at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly together with President Petr Pavel.
During his five-day stay in New York, the head of Czech diplomacy attended a number of multilateral events where he presented Czech interests and positions. At the G7 plus meeting, he informed his counterparts about the support Czechia provides to the Ukrainian energy sector.
"We provided 58 CHP units. More are on the way. We are sending hydro turbines. One Czech company is building a wind power plant in the Lviv region. A stable energy situation in Ukraine is in the interest of the security of the whole of Europe, which is why Czech diplomacy is dedicated to it," the minister said.
On Wednesday, Lipavský attended the second meeting of the so-called "Ukraine Compact" group. At this event, he spoke, among others, with US President Joe Biden, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
"Russia is trying to intimidate us. President Pavel said at the UN that hesitation only encourages the aggressor. If we want to protect the principle that borders are not changed by force, we must support Ukraine. It is such a simple equation," the minister said after the president's speech at the UN.
Other events that the Minister attended on the sidelines include the Middle East Process Ministerial Meeting, the Istanbul Initiative for NATO-Middle East Cooperation, the Global Coalition Against Synthetic Drugs Summit, and events in support of media freedom.
The UN General Assembly opens up opportunities for statesmen to meet counterparts they may not have the chance to meet during the year. Minister Lipavský used the time for a number of bilateral meetings, with colleagues from Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Egypt, Mongolia and Kosovo. In addition, during the week he held regular talks with his counterparts from the European Union and NATO.
