Minister Lipavský discussed security challenges in Europe and it the Sahel with the Minister of National Security of the Republic of Ghana

On 22 March 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský received a Ghanaian delegation led by Minister of National Security Albert Ken-Dapaah. At the forefront of the discussion was the current situation in the world, especially developments in Ukraine, it the Sahel and West Africa, and the possibilities of strengthening bilateral relations. The partners agreed that both countries are interested in developing mutual cooperation, especially in the field of defence and security.

Minister Lipavský presented the Czech strategic priorities to the Ghanaian delegation, whose members included the Chief of Staff of the Land Forces of Ghana, Major General Peter Nicholas Andoh, and National Coordinator of Ghana Boundary Commission, Major General Emmanuel Wekem Kotia, and expressed his belief that the Czech Republic, as one of Ghana's partner countries in Europe and an active partner in the fight against radicalism, terrorism and instability in the Sahel, will play a significant role in the modernization of the Ghanaian armed forces.

Minister Ken-Dapaah confirmed to the head of Czech diplomacy that Ghana is well acquainted with Czechia´s principled stance and support delivered, on a long-term basis, to the Sahel states. He is also familiar with the negative impact of the activities of Russian para-military units, the so-called Wagner Group, in the region.

Democratic Ghana, Czechia’s active partner in the foreign affairs field, belongs from the beginning to those African countries, which clearly condemned Russian aggression against Ukraine. In the Sahel, the country is significantly involved in security stabilization and prevention of the spread of radicalism in the region. In 2023, Ghana is a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. It successfully fulfills that role already for the fourth time. It aims to strengthen global peace and security for sustainable and inclusive development, raise the profile of the African agenda and achieve Security Council reform.
