Minister Lipavský Awarded the Medal "For Merit in Diplomacy" to the American historian Timothy D. Snyder

This was on the occasion of Professor Snyder's lecture on Monday 15 July at the Vzlet cultural center in Prague.

"I often turn to Professor Snyder's insightful works. My ownbook copy of The Road to Unfreedom, which the professorkindly signed for me last year in New York, has a special place in my library," said Minister Lipavský at the beginning.

Professor Snyder's works illustrate how easily dangerousideologies can lead to the collapse of democracies and the rise ofdictatorships. Minister Lipavský appreciated Professor Snyder'sextraordinary contribution to raising awareness of dangerousand even monstrous ideologies resulting in genocides, ethniccleansing or the violent pursuit of imperial ambitions.

"Professor Snyder's work reaches millions of people around theworld and draws attention to the continuing dangers posed by imperialist aspirations, especially from countries like Russia. It also shows us why and how we should defend freedom and democracy," said Minister Lipavský in his speech.

Timothy Snyder's work is an important part of "public diplomacy" because its quality makes a significant contributionto the understanding of the true nature of these ideologies by a wide range of readers in many countries.
