Minister Lipavský Attended the 61st Munich Security Conference

Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský attended the Munich Security Conference (MSC) from 14 to 16 February 2025 as part of the Czech delegation led by President Petr Pavel. He spoke on a panel on cyber security and met with a number of foreign partners on the sidelines of the conference.

Together with the Czech Head of State, Minister Lipavský discussed military support for Ukraine with the US Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg. “It was a pleasure to speak again with US General Kellogg after a week. President Pavel and I discussed with him the Czech perspective on the Russian war in Ukraine, where Russia is killing civilians on a daily basis. We must provide the Ukrainians with the means to defend themselves” Minister Lipavský said.

The Czech representatives discussed mutual relations, security and cooperation in the energy sector and transport with Friedrich Merz, chairman of the German CDU. “We agreed that security, migration and energy stability must be addressed together,” the Head of Czech diplomacy added.

The bilateral meeting between Minister Lipavský and his Chinese counterpart Wang I also focused on global security and the Russian war in Ukraine. “Any support for aggression worries us. I also recalled China's condemnation of the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops,” Lipavský said after the meeting.

As part of the MSC programme, Minister Lipavský took part in a panel discussion on cyber security titled Hackers for Hire: Confronting the growing market for cyber mercenaries organised by Microsoft. At the end of the conference an irregular meeting of EU foreign ministers was held to discuss current security issues.

On the sidelines of the conference, the Czech Foreign Minister met with a number of foreign counterparts, such as his Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski, the new head of Argentine diplomacy Gerard Werthein, the new Icelandic Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrín Gunnarsdóttir and the EU Special Representative for the Sahel Joao Cravinho.
