Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský to Take Over the New Building of the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Date: , Venue: Washington, USA

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský will travel to the United States next week to officially take over, on behalf of Czech diplomacy, the new building of the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C.

In November 2024, the Czech Government decided to return Czech diplomacy in the United States to the centre of events—namely to a prestigious address on Massachusetts Avenue, home to many diplomatic missions, including those of the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, the Republic of Korea, India and Türkiye. Relocating the embassy’s main seat will improve its location and accessibility, enhance conditions for meetings with partners at the embassy, and facilitate access to meetings in U.S. institutions.

One of the reasons for seeking new premises was the need for a major renovation of the current embassy building at 3900 Spring of Freedom Street. After the renovation, the compound will continue to house the consular and cultural sections as well as staff apartments.

The total cost of purchasing the new embassy and renovating the existing one amounts to CZK 275 million. All staff are expected to be working at the new address by early summer next year at the latest.

On the margins of his visit to the United States, Minister Lipavský will also hold a number of meetings focused on Czech–U.S. cooperation in the areas of security, trade and academic collaboration.
