Leo Docherty, British Under Secretary of State for Europe was received by Deputy Minister Jan Marian and Director General for Europe Jaroslav Kurfürst during his visit to the Czech Republic.
The UK is one of the Czechia's closest partners and allies. Under Secretary of State Docherty's trip represented a further step in the implementation of the bilateral Statement of Intent signed by Minister Jan Lipavský and his then ministerial colleague Liz Truss in May 2022. On the one-year anniversary, both sides noted that the implementation of the Statement of Intent is progressing very successfully and that mutual coordination is beneficial for both sides. Under Secretary of State Docherty and Deputy Minister Marian initialled the Delivery Plan, which outlined further areas of bilateral activity for the three-year period.
The current situation in Ukraine and the review of relations with Russia dominated the debate. Both, the UK and Czechia, are among the main supporters of Ukraine and the coordination of military assistance, continued pressure on Russia, political and economic support for Ukraine and support for its reconstruction are top priorities. Director General Kurfürst assured his counterpart that "Czech support for Ukraine remains strong and the Western allies must reach agreement on Ukraine's prospects for both NATO and EU membership." Deputy Marian confirmed "the key challenge is to prevent circumvention of Russian sanctions."
