Jan Marian, a career diplomat and former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, has been appointed the new head of the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic in Vienna. He has already received his letter of credence from Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský and will take up his post on December 1, 2025. On December 4 and 5, he will attend the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Vienna in his new role.
He will replace Ivo Šrámek, who has been in office since September 2018, as the Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the UN, OSCE, and other international organizations in Vienna. Martin Smolek, who was originally appointed as Ivo Šrámek's successor, resigned from the position after being appointed a judge of the Constitutional Court.
"Jan Marian has been with the Ministry for 17 years and is an experienced diplomat with experience in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. I wish him every success in his new role as head of the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic in Vienna," said Minister Lipavský on his appointment.
In addition to his position as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jan Marian has previously headed the Communications Department, served as Special Envoy for the Eastern Partnership, and worked at the Embassy in Moscow and the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the EU.
The Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic in Vienna represents the country to the international organisations based in the Austrian capital. These include various United Nations (UN) agencies, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and others.
