
Council of Europe Committee of Ministers in Luxembourg Reaffirms Support For Human Rights and Accountability for Russian Aggression

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe Confirmed the Importance of Human Rights, Democracy, and the Rule of Law in Today´s Europe. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Marian intervened at the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Luxembourg. „Czechia supports the Council of Europe´s tireless work to protect and promote human rights, democracy, and the rule of law as well as to implement the outcomes of the Reykjavik summit”, emphasized Deputy Minister Marian.
One of the most important issues for the Council of Europe remains supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, including efforts to ensure the accountability of Russian officials for the crime of aggression. The representative of Ukraine delivered a letter to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe expressing Ukraine's readiness to sign an agreement on establishing the Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
Ministers also addressed the proposal for a New Democratic Pact for Europe.
As an honorary guest, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, a representative of the Belarussian democratic opposition participated in the informal part of the ministers' meeting. After the meeting, Luxembourg handed over the presidency to Malta for the next six months. On the sidelines of the event, Deputy Minister Marian held talks with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Environment, and Culture of Liechtenstein, Sabine Monauni, with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Andorra, Imma Tor Faus as well as the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Serbia Marko Đurić.
The main objective of the Council of Europe, established in 1949, is to promote and protect human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The Czech Republic has been a member since 1993. Currently, the Council of Europe has 46 member states. It is based in Strasbourg.
