On December 8-9, policy planners from MFAs of EU member states took part in a regular meeting organized by the Strategic Planning Division of the EEAS to discuss the challenges of upholding the multilateral system of global governance. The first session dealt with the prospects for the UN-centred multilateral security system in view of the resurgence of power politics. On the second day, the discussion began by focusing on opportunities and difficulties created by new forms of global governance, especially the rise in importance of regional organizations and the emergence of powerful non-state actors. The final bloc focused on the prospects for global economic governance and on the future of multilateral trade and investment deals. Participants were also invited to a lecture by Ivan Krastev of the Centre for Liberal Studies in Sofia, who delivered a stimulating talk on the notion of hypocrisy in populist discourse.
